Welcome to REGAP of Illinois!
Retired Greyhounds as Pets

REGAP of Illinois, Inc. is a Chicagoland area/Central Illinois based anti-race, non-profit, rescue and adoption group. We are a 100% volunteer, 501c3 charitable organization. Our mission is to rescue these magnificent dogs, find loving forever homes for them and to inform the public that adopting a retired racing Greyhound is an excellent decision.

Greyhounds are loving, devoted pets who, contrary to popular belief, are obedient, intelligent, calm and relaxed dogs.

Each year the overly competitive racing industry forces thousands of racers into early retirement, usually between the age of two and five years.

We are not going to be open on Sundays any longer.  We can't get a single thing done here on the weekends.  I'm tired of not having any time for Us as well.  As much as I would like to be available for anyone that would like to see the Gryhds, this must be done on the other 6 days.  I Love seeing and meeting All of you, but I have to do this.  I hope that everyone understands.

Love, Mona

xx REGAP's site is 1 year old !!!
Feb 10 2010 - 10:36 PM by Becca

So we officially launched this site one year ago.  Feb 12, 2009 we had a whopping 52 new members join up.  Since then we've grown to over 300 !!  You can see more if you go to the Stats Page, but here's some quick numbers off the top:

                    Total           Avg per Day
Members         304                1.02
Posts            13134             30.06
Topics           1291               3.16

There are so many posts on here each day that I have a hard time keeping up with them, but at the same time, I'm not having to spend nearly as much time as I had anticipated with answering tech questions or dealing with "managing" the site.  I'm proud of you guys for having jumped in and made the site your own Wink

We've had some ups and downs with site lag and host downtime and I always love seeing how many people feel left out when they can't get on - that means we have a vibrant and highly active community here - not just a bunch of spammers posting junk to see their post count add up!  While of course there are boards that we dread seeing new posts in, it's good to have them and know that we're all in this for the love of our hounds and we all know just how crazy the rest of us are!

Love you guys!

Sad news today.  Greys Speedweek (Speedy) has Osteo.  I saw Speedy, Mom (Val) and Mark (Speedy's Uncle) at Dr Wahl's this morning.  He is so Handsome!!!  He even wanted to Roo for me.  He was just too excited to see "I'm goin online & Gallahad" to Roo.  I asked that they call me for an update on Speedy.  It wasn't but about 15 minutes when I got the call from Sue (Speedy's Auntie).  I just want to Thank the Peavey Family for taking in this special guy.  He always made me laugh.  He is the Best Rooer out of any of the dogs that have passed through Regap.  I know that he had quite a past, but I was so Happy to know that he was in his forever home.  He seems so Happy!!!  I know that taking on an oldie but a goodie is always risky.  You never know how long they might last.  Hell, that goes for anything that breathes.  I hope that Speedy has a wonderful long life yet to live.  Prayers go out for The Peavey Family tonight.
Kisses to Speedy and the Gang!
Love, Mona

xx Need Advice on Resource Guarding
Mar 08 2010 - 04:47 PM by ees4

Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice.  My husband and I adopted AMF Hockey Puck from Regap a little over a month ago.  Everything has been going very smoothly except for the past couple of days.  When we first got him we were able to pet him when he was on his bed but two days ago, he started growling if we got near his bed (or anywhere he was laying).  I did some research and I think he is resource guarding.  I read that we should try walking up to him as far as we can before he growls and give him a treat.  We tried it this morning and it did work for awhile.  This afternoon however I received a package in the mail and when I went to open the box he growled at me and stood in front of the box.  I tried "exchanging" the box for a treat but he ate the treat and returned to the box to continue growling.  In the past a harsh "no" would work but now he growls more.  I ended up having to spray him with the bitter green apple spray so I could get the box away.  Any advice on how to handle resource guarding?  I've never had a dog resource guard before so I'm in unfamiliar territory.  Since it seems to be getting worse, I want to start correcting his behavior immediately.

Thanks!
Emily Marincic
